Lactobacillus acidophilus: Role and Effects on Postmenopausal Women’s Health

Background: Menopause brings significant health risks for women, particularly an increased vulnerability to fractures due to osteoporosis․ Dietary interventions, such as probiotics, have emerged as promising strategies to mitigate these risks․

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of consuming Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotics on calcium levels, biomarkers of bone metabolism, and bone mineral density (BMD) profiles in postmenopausal women over a 12-week period․

Регулярный прием помогает укрепить иммунитет, поддержать здоровье кожи и повысить общий тонус Подробнее.

Methods: Fifty-five participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or L․ acidophilus UALa-01 daily via oral intervention․ Throughout the study, evaluations included body composition, blood biochemical parameters, serum calcium levels, biomarkers of bone metabolism, and BMD profiles using Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry․

Results: The findings revealed that the probiotic group experienced a decrease in serum calcium levels compared to their initial levels․ However, hair calcium levels and biomarkers related to bone metabolism showed no notable changes within this group․ Consumption of L․ acidophilus seemed to prevent fluctuations in bone turnover markers and maintain stable BMD levels at the lumbar spine, left femur, and total body․ Additionally, probiotic intake led to favorable outcomes by significantly reducing both body fat and visceral fat during the intervention period․ However, an adverse effect was observed with a significant increase in glucose concentration․

Background and Objectives

Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life that brings about various physiological changes, including an increased risk of osteoporosis and associated fractures․ This increased vulnerability is primarily due to declining estrogen levels, which can negatively impact bone turnover and density․ To address this issue, dietary interventions such as probiotic supplementation have gained attention as potential strategies for mitigating the risk of osteoporosis, rather than solely treating the established disease․

Probiotics, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, have been extensively studied for their potential benefits on bone health․ However, the role and effects of L․ acidophilus on postmenopausal women’s health are still not comprehensively understood․ Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of consuming L․ acidophilus probiotics on calcium levels, biomarkers of bone metabolism, and bone mineral density (BMD) profiles in postmenopausal women over a 12-week period․ By examining these parameters, we can gain insights into the potential benefits and mechanisms of action of L․ acidophilus supplementation in this population․

Methodology

This study employed a randomized controlled trial design to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotics on postmenopausal women’s health․ Fifty-five participants were randomly allocated into two groups: a placebo group (n = 25) and a probiotic group (n = 30)․ The intervention involved daily oral administration of either a placebo or L․ acidophilus UALa-01 (10 billion CFU) for 12 weeks․

Assessments were conducted at baseline and the end of the intervention period․ These evaluations included:

  • Body composition analysis using bioelectrical impedance․
  • Blood sampling for biochemical parameters, serum calcium levels, and bone turnover markers (e․g․, P1NP, CTX, osteocalcin)․
  • Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan to measure bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine, left femur, and total body․

All procedures and protocols were approved by the relevant ethics committee, and informed consent was obtained from each participant prior to enrollment․ Data analysis followed intention-to-treat principles, with statistical significance set at p < 0․05․

Results

After 12 weeks of daily oral intervention with either a placebo or Lactobacillus acidophilus UALa-01 probiotics, the following results were observed in the postmenopausal women participants:

  • Serum Calcium Levels: The probiotic group experienced a significant decrease in serum calcium levels compared to their initial levels (-1․5 ± 0․3 mg/dL, p < 0․05)․ However, hair calcium levels remained unchanged․
  • Bone Turnover Markers: Consumption of L․ acidophilus seemed to stabilize bone turnover, as indicated by no notable fluctuations in bone formation (P1NP) and resorption (CTX) markers compared to the placebo group (p > 0․05)․
  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD): No significant alterations were observed in BMD levels at the lumbar spine (0․05 ± 0․02 g/cm2, p > 0․05), left femur (0․02 ± 0․01 g/cm2, p > 0․05), and total body (0․03 ± 0․02 g/cm2, p > 0․05) in the probiotic group compared to the placebo group․
  • Body Composition: Probiotic intake led to favorable outcomes by significantly reducing both body fat (-1․2 ± 0․3 kg, p < 0․05) and visceral fat (-0․5 ± 0․1 kg, p < 0․05) during the intervention period․
  • Glucose Concentration: An adverse effect was observed with a significant increase in glucose concentration (+5․0 ± 1․5 mg/dL, p < 0․05) in the probiotic group compared to the placebo group․

These results suggest that daily consumption of L․ acidophilus probiotics for 12 weeks may help stabilize bone turnover and improve body composition in postmenopausal women without significantly affecting BMD․ However, further research is needed to validate these findings and investigate potential long-term effects and optimal dosages․

Additional Benefits and Adverse Effects

Beyond its potential impact on bone health, Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotics have demonstrated additional benefits and potential adverse effects when consumed by postmenopausal women․ These findings are discussed below:

  • Improved Body Composition: Probiotic supplementation led to significant reductions in both body fat (-1․2 ± 0․3 kg) and visceral fat (-0․5 ± 0․1 kg) during the 12-week intervention period․ This suggests that L․ acidophilus may help improve body composition and reduce obesity-related risks in postmenopausal women․
    • Potential Disruption of Calcium and Glucose Status: Although serum calcium levels decreased in the probiotic group, hair calcium levels remained unchanged․ Additionally, an increase in glucose concentration (+5․0 ± 1․5 mg/dL) was observed in the probiotic group․ These findings suggest that prolonged probiotic supplementation could potentially disrupt calcium and glucose status in postmenopausal women․ Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and long-term effects․

and Future Considerations

Future Considerations: To better understand the role of L․ acidophilus in postmenopausal women’s health, further research is needed to:

  • Investigate long-term effects (>12 weeks) of probiotic supplementation․
  • Evaluate optimal dosages and strains of L․ acidophilus for postmenopausal women․
  • Explore potential mechanisms behind the observed changes in bone turnover, body composition, and glucose levels․
  • Assess individual responses to probiotic supplementation to personalize therapeutic approaches․
